Early Game Combat

Introduction

Combat is a key pillar of the game and can be overwhelming at times - it need not be this way! The aim of this channel is to help you get up and running with some ideas on how to train your levels whilst being fully immersed into the world of RuneScape.

We will cover in this channel:

⬥ Some key tips before you start

⬥ Early game combat quests to help you gain some levels whilst being immersed in the lore

⬥ Some training suggestions (these are not mandatory)

⬥ An introduction to War's Retreat and some further quest information relating to combat.

Some key tips before you start

⬥ Hit chance i.e. your damage scaling when attacking monsters can be viewed as a percentage on the monster's HP bar. The higher the number, the greater your damage.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Wearing "off-style" armour e.g. a melee weapon with magic armour severely impacts your hit chance in a negative manner! Be sure to match your armour combat style with your weapon combat style.

⬥ Attack attack affects melee accuracy and its level is what determines what melee weapons you can equip. Strength strength determines your damage dealt with melee weapons.

⬥ The best defence is a good offence: weapon upgrades take precedence over armour upgrades!

⬥ You will level quickly in the early levels - if you feel like you can survive without issues, skip an armour upgrade and save your gold for the following one.

⬥ When using Magic magic you should regularly upgrade your auto-cast to the highest available spell tier. You can find out a spell's damage level cap by checking its tooltip.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• ‎ ‎For example: Air strike's damage cap is at level 16 - you can upgrade to Air bolt at level 17.

⬥ If you need help, don't struggle in silence! You can ask questions in the help channels of:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• The official Runescape Discord invite link #unknown-channel

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• The PvM Encyclopedia invite link #pvm-help

Early Combat

Combat combat Quests can be a great way to get the early levels in any skill, including combat skills.

Some initial quests we highly recommend are the following:

⬥ These set you up to more easily manage other early quest fights:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Waterfall quest strength attack

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Merlin's crystalHoly grail defence prayer

⬥ For necromancy:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Necromancy! (tutorial quest)

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Gather 400 souls to lvl20; fragile mementos are recommended.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• At level 20 & 24: Kili row and Rune Mythos quests.

⬥ These quests require fighting and introduce you to combat - you'll be rewarded for your efforts with combat xp:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(the skill icons indicate where we think you should spend that xp)

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Vampyre Slayer - Use the xp reward on magic or range

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Witch's House constitution

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Fight Arena attack thieving

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎⬩ Use Halberd or range/ magic / necromancy to safespot

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Grand Tree combat lamp

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎⬩ Use Halberd or range/ magic / necromancy to safespot

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Tree gnome village attack

⬥ The quest and miniquest below offer a reward which will greatly enhance your damage against undead creatures:

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(we recommend having level 50 combat skills and gear)

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Haunted Mine

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Miniquest: Lair of Tarn Razolor

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎⬩ Yields: salve amulet(e) salveamulet

Note: This amulet gives +20% accuracy and damage against Undead creatures

Combat combat Training

If questing isn't your cup of tea - getting stuck into killing some monsters might be more your style. Some thing to keep in mind are:

⬥ Further levelling focuses on killing monsters for xp.

⬥ Upgrade your weapons to a higher tier when you can!

⬥ Include area-of-effect (AoE) abilities as they become available. Check ability tooltips.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Ranged range: chinchompas turn non-AoE abilities into a 3x3 AoE attack.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Melee melee: halberds gives a longer range on AoE attacks.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• Magic magic has fewer early game AoE abilities.

We also have some pre-created ability bars and gear progression suggestions to help you slay these monsters. You can check them out here:

⬥ Early magic upgrade order & ability bars:#Magic

⬥ Early melee upgrade order & ability bars: #Melee

⬥ Early range upgrade order & ability bars: #Ranged

⬥ Early necromancy upgrade order, talent tree & ability bars:#Necromancy

Some methods you can try out:

Level 1-30:

Ghostly Trolls in City of Um cave.

⬥ Monsters in Lumbridge Catacombs. Requires Blood Pact quest.

Level 30-50/60:

Dragith Nurn. Requires Blood Pact quest (salveamulet works!).

⬥ Slayer assignments. See list of Slayer Masters.

Level 50/60-80:

The Abyss Monsters (req. Enter the Abyss miniquest). Use AoE, protectfrommelee and vampyrism aura if possible.

Armoured Zombies (req. Defender of Varrock quest, salveamulet works!).

War's Retreat & Bossing

War's Retreat is a PvM hub that can be accessed at combat Level 60 north of Draynor lodestone.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• This place can serve as a free, unlimited place to teleport to for easy bank access, restoring prayer and more as you increase your boss kill count.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• To unlock the teleport, it is recommended to kill 10 lower level bosses such as Arch-Glacor (0 mechanics), King Black Dragon, Giant Mole, or Croesus.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• For more info on bossing see #bossing-path

Reaper tasks are a daily PvM activity that can be accessed at combat Level 60 talking to Death, north of Draynor lodestone.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• You earn points to spend on rewards by killing bosses in a quantity that Death assigns you. You will only be given bosses that you have the levels/unlocks to access.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• You will also gain Slayer slayer experience for completing the task.

Quests

⬥ For a list of quests with useful PvM unlocks, see Quest Unlocks in #permanent-unlocks.

⬥ One of the first useful unlocks to aim for is the tier 3 Infernal Puzzle Box infernalpuzzlebox, which prevents your adrenaline from draining when outside of combat.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• You can find the box in The Zamorakian Undercity specifically here. Completing the Daughter of Chaos quest (40 Archaeology archaeology and 40 Divination divination) unlocks tier 2.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎• To unlock tier 3, complete the Civil War I miniquest, and the Gross Misconduct achievement.

⬥ Two quests also worth mentioning are The Temple at Senntisten and Plague's End. The first unlocks curses, which are basically stronger prayers. The second unlocks better overloads and combination potions.

⬥ Note that quests are more rewarding the sooner you do them, due to how level XP scaling works.
